

Averill Barney Carr, 96, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 in Seguin, TX. He was born September 14, 1919 in Lake Charles, LA. In 1924 he moved with his family to Shreveport, LA where he attended Queensboro Grade school and Fair Park High School. He then attended Louisiana Polytechnic College in Ruston, LA. He moved to Longview, TX, in 1941 and participated in a flight training program that led to a flight instructor position teaching U. S. Army Air Corps cadets to fly. In September 1944, he received a commission as a pilot in the U. S. Army Air Corps and was soon sent to India to deliver fuel, bombs, and supplies to the Flying Tigers in Kunming, China. He was ‘missing in action’ for 8 days in April of 1945 after which he returned to the United States and continued in a pilot status.
Immediately after being released from military service, he was hired by R. G. Letourneau. Inc. in their engineering department in product design in Longview, TX, where he stayed for over sixteen years. He also taught Letourneau College students to fly while there. Later he was transferred to Corpus Christi, TX, where he became involved with a company that provided data for oil and gas drilling operations. He was vice-president and company pilot. He was then employed by M/D Totco, another oil related company, where he worked until his retirement April 1, 2005 at the age of 85.
In 1942 he married his first wife, Maedelle Skinner of Florien, La, with whom he had two children. In 1979, he married Jeanne Johnston. In 2005, he and Jeanne moved from Portland, TX, to Seguin, TX.
He was a member of Longview Masonic Lodge 404. He was an endowed member of Scottish Rite body Shriner-Al Amin Temple-Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen Society.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Jeanne; 2 children: son Raymond Carr of Austin, daughter Kaylon Fenner and husband Richard of Houston; 5 grandchildren: Shannon Connally, Candice Carr, Chesley Carr and wife Alicia, Chad Fenner and wife Allison, all in the Austin area; Kinsey Biggs and husband Bill of College Station; great-grandchildren Samantha Connally, Calvin Averill Connally, Cameron Carr, Colby Carr, Elijah Fenner, Olivia Fenner, Caleb Biggs, and Joey Biggs.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 2, 10:30 am, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte Street, Seguin, TX.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals, Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of your choice.
