Evelyn Anna Hilda Wieding Gerth "Oma" passed away peacefully at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin, TX on May 12th, 2013 at the age of 94. She was born to Fred and Leona Wolfshohl Wieding on March 18, 1919 at her parents’ farm near New Berlin, Texas. She was baptized on May 4th, 1919, and confirmed her faith on March 25th, 1934 at Christ Lutheran Church, Elm Creek. On July 1st, 1939, she married Elton William Gerth, in LaVernia, and they enjoyed over 55 years together. They worked side by side for nearly 50 years to grow a very successful family business - Gerth Meat Market as well as worked diligently to farm the land that they both loved. Oma was a wonderful and generous mother, sister, aunt and friend, but the roles she treasured the most were that of grandmother and great grandmother. Keeping her faith strong throughout her life, she was an instrumental member of St. John Lutheran Church, Marion, TX, where she served as Sunday school teacher, choir member, and an active member in her women's circle. Additionally, she sewed several beautiful banners that are still used today in the church as well as starting the tradition of making Chrismon decorations for the Church's Christmas tree. Throughout her life she was active in the PTA, EEA (formerly Extension Homemakers Association) of Marion and involved in numerous community and social organizations. Evelyn's biggest legacy was her World Class Dill pickles that she would can during the summer and would donate to area churches, fire departments, and other organizations. Evelyn's primary interest was always in her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family and she enjoyed being a part of their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Leona, her beloved husband Elton, and her older sister, Louise (Lala) Wieding. She is survived by her sons, Ronald and wife Mary Jane, and Rodney; three granddaughters, Lisa Timmermann, Candee Mills and husband James and Melissa Gerth; three great grandchildren - Dakota Timmermann, Tayler Mills and Trenton Mills. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth Wieding and sister Bernice Lenz and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed by the entire community and her many dear friends and family.
Visitation was held Monday, May 13, 2013 from 5 - 8 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home. Celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Marion at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14th. Serving as pallbearers are James Mills, Tayler Mills, Ray Timmermann, Kyle Kelso, Stephen Kelsheimer and Douglas Zwicke, with honorary pallbearers Dakota Timmermann and Trenton Mills.
