On May 28, 2011 Guadalupe Fuentes Gutierrez passed from this earth to her heavenly reward. Known to her friends and family as “Lupe”, she will be remembered for the love, devotion, kindness and selflessness she practiced throughout her life and for unwavering support to her family. She was employed as a School Crossing Guard for St. James Catholic School for 9 years. Later she worked at Guadalupe Valley Hospital as a nurse’s aide for more than 20 years.
Lupe was also an active member in the Seguin community as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars. She loved arts and crafts and looked forward to the Guadalupe County Fair. She frequently entered her bake goods and exhibited her crochet and embroidery work, often winning both blue and red ribbons. She served as a volunteer Cub Scout Den Mother for Den # 1 at St. James Catholic School for 6 years. A supporter of the Humane Society, one of her favorite sayings was “bark if you love me.” Lupe enjoyed gardening and the companionship of her dogs.
Lupe’s intense love of sports began with Seguin Matador football games, which she never missed. After her children graduated from high school, she continued to follow the Matadors but also became a “hard core” television sports fan. She never missed a Dallas Cowboy football game (except for “important” church services), a Spurs basketball game (she kept a copy of their entire schedule), a Longhorn football game (she kept her Rose Bowl catalog), a World Series, a Master’s Golf Tournament or the Olympic Games. She was usually the loudest person during any of these events and her enthusiasm was infectious.
In addition to her work and community activities, Lupe was a devout Catholic. Both she and her husband were parishioners at St. James Catholic Church for at least 20 years, where her children attended parochial school. She was a member of the Women’s Club and Altar Society. After the passing of her beloved Henry, her husband of 46 years, she became a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. There she was a member of the Altar Society and also a member and an officer of the Sociedad de GUADALUPANAS. She participated in Church Bazaars and Bake Sales, and other activities to support her church. In her later years, when she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Austin, TX., she joined St. Louis Catholic Church, where again she was a member of the Women’s Club.
Lupe is survived in life by her son, Henry R. Gutierrez, Jr. of Cibilo, TX; her daughter and son-in-law, Dahlia Marie Gutierrez and Prof. George E. Dix of Austin, TX.; one sister and brother-in-law, Dolores & Willie Rico of Bromwich, Ohio; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Robert & Bessie Fuentes of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law, Mary Morales of New Braunfels, TX ; as well as countless cousins, nephews, nieces and godchildren, whom she loved.
Visitation will be held in the Chapel at Goetz Funeral Home from 5-9 pm on Tuesday, May 31st, with a Rosary service commencing at 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, June 1st at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with interment to follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Seguin, where Lupe will be laid to rest next to her husband.
A Memorial Fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank and the family requests that in lieu of flowers or plants, that donations, in any amount, be made to the “Guadalupe F. Gutierrez Memorial Fund”. All donations will go to the Catholic parishes in Seguin in her honor. Please visit our online register book at www.goetzfuneral.com.
