JACINTO “JAKE” RINCÓN (1943 - 2014)
Jacinto ‘Jake’ Rincon died November 8, 2014 at the age of 71; he was surrounded by his family on his beloved farm near the Galle Community in northern Guadalupe County.
Jacinto was born at home, September 11, 1943, delivered by the legendary midwife, Amada González. His parents were the late María and Crispín Rincón. As soon as he could reach the clutch and brakes, he began driving a tractor and operating farm machinery, planting and harvesting corn, cotton, and grain sorghum. At harvest time, he and his father would get up early to tow with the tractor 2 trailers in tandem loaded with ear corn. After delivery to one of the Seguin grain buyers, the two drove through Geronimo to drop off Jacinto for class at Navarro Public Schools. After school, Jacinto would change clothes and get on the tractor to steer the one-row ear corn picker up and down the field until he filled the two trailers again, to repeat the drive to town with his father early the next morning. His childhood on the farm helped Jacinto develop his natural aptitude for, and love of, mechanics.
In 1962, Jacinto was one of 15 students who graduated from Navarro Public Schools. That year he received an award from the Dekalb Agricultural Association and hit a triple to center field -- picking up an RBI -- in the game in which the NHS Panthers defeated the Marion HS Bulldogs, 11-2, winning the baseball District Meet.
On October 8, 1962, Jacinto joined the U.S. Air Force and after boot camp at Lackland AFB, was assigned to Ent AFB in Colorado Springs, CO. He received training in data processing and as a personnel specialist. On June 5, 1963, Jacinto participated in the festivities welcoming President John F. Kennedy to Ent AFB/North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Jacinto served in the Air Force until July 7, 1967; he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.
Jacinto’s adolescent years coincided with the rise of Tejano music; he loved to dance. While stationed at Ent AFB, he sought out dances in Pueblo, CO featuring Tejano bands from Texas. On one such dance, Jacinto met and danced with a green-eyed partner, Cecilia Finn. Cecilia and her family nicknamed him, “Jake,” The couple married on May 29, 1965.
After military service, Jake circled back to his love of mechanics by becoming a machinist in private industry in Colorado. Eventually Jake and Cecilia moved their family to the farm in Texas. Jake continued his trade as a machinist and machinist supervisor in the civil service. On August 17, 1997, he received a certificate for 20 years of service to the U.S. Government. On May 14, 2000, he received an associate’s in Applied Science - Automotive Technology from St. Philip’s College in San Antonio. Jake passed his last years enjoying life and work on the farm and driving his Silverado “dream pickup.”
