Brenda Lackey Mitchell, 83, of Trinity, NC flew away into the well-earned embrace of God on April 6, 2024. Born to Thomas and Maude Lackey of Stony Point, NC. Brenda, or “Mamaw”, was the youngest of an astounding family of 16 children. On July 26, 1958, Brenda married Thomas “Tommy” Mitchell, her husband of 64 years.
Together, Brenda and Tommy embarked on a life of entrepreneurship, creating Central Carolina Insurance with offices in High Point and Archdale. Brenda was the Bookkeeper and self-educated computer specialist. She also created and ran First Class Banners and Signs.
A skilled country cook, she loved the Dallas Cowboys, country music (her favorite song was “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”), playing with the young children in her life, and being with her brothers and sisters at the large Lackey Reunions. Her infectious laugh will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Near the end of her life, she and Tommy settled on a quiet farmland in rural Trinity, NC where they remained until circumstances led them to move to Largo, Florida where Brenda would eventually pass away.
Brenda is now rejoicing in Heaven with her parents as well as six sisters—L.V. Head, Eloise Hayes, Marie West, Vera Adams, Rozella West, and Hazel McCurdy—and six brothers—Harlee, Hueston, James, Austin, Donald, and Buck Lackey. She is survived by one sister and two brothers: Ruth (Miller) Walker, Waitsell (Donnie) Lackey, and Grover (Jenny Lackey) in addition to many nephews, nieces, and extended family whom she adored and cherished.
She is also, survived by her husband, Tommy; daughters Charlotte (Danny) Hemmings and Linda (David) Allen; four grandchildren: Brette (Jimmy Nielsen) Hemmings, Nick (Anna) Allen, Ryan (Melissa) Allen, and Dylan Allen; and five great-grandchildren: Nadia, Jackson, Levi, Finley Grace, and Rue Loren.
The family would like to send a heartfelt Thank You to Elison Senior Living of Pinecrest in Largo, Florida (specifically the staff of the Memory Care Unit) for the loving and compassionate care they have and are providing for so many. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Brenda’s Memory to SuncoastHospiceFoundation.org.
Burial services will be held on Saturday, April 20th, 2024 at 11 A.M. at Guilford Memorial at 6000 W Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC 27407.
