John grew up on the south side of Indianapolis where he graduated from Manual High School in 1956. John got into the grocery business at a young age. He loved the grocery business where he worked as a manager for Marsh Supermarkets for many years. He wanted to own his own store, so he went into part ownership of Ray’s IGA on S. Meridian in Indianapolis. He then moved to Marion, Indiana where he opened up the first box store in Indiana, called Doles Pricecrusher. He also opened up Doles Market in Fairmount and two convenient stores, one in Marion and the other in Windfall.
John sold his stores and moved to Seminole, FL in 1984 and then started his second career in the Real Estate industry. He worked for ERA, Free Realty, and IMAPP realtors. He specialized in the Glenwood Estates where he was the main realtor and where he also lived. Everybody knew and loved John where he worked well into his 70’s with his daughter Denise assisting him in his later years. The amazing part of that was that he had a major stroke in 1995 that left him partially paralyzed on his left side, but he kept on selling homes in the park.
John was a long time member at Indian Rocks Church in Largo, Florida. He served as a deacon for many years as well as a greeter. He was also very involved in his connection group on Sunday mornings and his men’s Bible study on Wednesday mornings. He was very faithful in attending the Wednesday night services and Saturday night country church.
John loved horses and horseback riding. He owned many different breeds on his 5 acre farm in Marion. He and Denise participated in horse shows in Indiana on the weekends. John, his son, Dwayne and Denise loved to go on long camping weekends and trips with his sister Betty, brother-in-law Jerry, and his nieces Rennie and Jille. One of the favorite trips was out west to Pavilion, Wyoming where they visited his Dad’s ranch where there was only, cattle, mountains with rattlesnakes, and out houses! They also visited Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, WY on that trip.
John was the proud father of his two children and is survived by them; Dwayne (Jill) of Greenwood, Indiana and Denise (Alan) Perry of Seminole. He lived with Denise and Alan for the last 9 years of his life and was so appreciative of their great care of him. He has six grandchildren, Mitchell (Sarah) Eggers, Randee Fumea, Megan (Corey) Lee, Adam Doles, Kip (Ashley) Perry, and Stacey (Justin) Marlow. John also has 8 great grandchildren; Skylar Fumea, Eli, Moses, Emmie, and George Eggers, Kennedy and Beau Perry, and Roman Lee. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Ron) Schooley and brother-in-law, Verbil Isbell.
John was preceded in death by his parents Margaret (John) Weber and Herbert W. Doles, sisters Betty Haymaker, Mary Jo Isbell, brother David Weber, and brother-in-law and best friend Jerry D. Haymaker.
There will be a funeral service at First Baptist of Indian Rocks on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in the sanctuary at 4:00 with a food reception following. There will be a family burial at Indian Rocks Memorial Gardens immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to John’s grandson Mitchell and his mission team who is spreading the gospel in Germany.
