Marian Leonard Platt died peacefully after a short illness on February 24, 2012.
Born in San Diego, California, daughter of an Engineer for the California Highway Department, Marian, moved between West Los Angeles, Sacramento, Santa Monica, Altadena, and Pasadena.
Marian married Arthur E. Platt, an Ensign in the Navy who served aboard the South Dakota during WWII, on July 3, 1945. After the war, Marian worked as an assistant librarian while her husband attended Cal Tech. They moved to Whittier, California in 1952, where they raised a daughter and a son.
Marian was a homemaker for most of the early years of her marriage. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader for 7 years, earning the Silver Medallion twice, the highest award Camp Fire gives to a leader.
Marian belonged to the La Colima Juniors, a federated Women’s club in Whittier, California, serving as President her second year.
Marian returned to the work force, working for Rio Vista school as the school secretary for 15 years. She was awarded the PTA Honorary Life Membership twice. Once from Mulberry School, her children’s elementary school, for her youth work, and the other from Rio Vista elementary school for her work there.
Marian and her husband retired and moved to Sequim in 1981. They lived 18 years in Jamestown, enjoying golf, bridge, volunteering and a wonderful circle of friends.
Beginning in 1987, she had a dream come true – to write a weekly column for the Sequim Gazette. Which she did for 25 years.
Widowed in 1999, Marian moved to Dominion Terrace. In 2001, Marian met Barney Hall, also widowed in 1999. The had a commitment ceremony and moved to Chicken Coop Rd.
It was during these years the she put her three loves together – gardening, cooking and writing. Over a period of ten years, she wrote the first regional narrative cook book of the Sequim Valley, FROM MY KITCHEN WINDOW. This she self-published with Barney’s help, and sold 1000 copies in 5 years – 2 being purchased by the Sequim library.
In 2000, Marian began writing a food column for RV Life magazine and was also a Field Editor for Taste of Home.
Marian and Barney also traveled to Europe, the British Isles and many places in the United States.
Marian is survived by her husband, Barney Hall of Sequim, her daughter, Susan Cohn, of Algona, WA, her son, David Platt, of Santa Cruz, CA. Grandson, Arthur Cohn, of Algona, granddaughter, Carolanne Platt of Santa Cruz, CA. Daughter-in-law, Merribeth Platt of Santa Cruz, CA, Son-in-law, James Cohn of Algona, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.
Services will be Saturday, March 3rd, 1:00pm, at Sequim View Cemetery. Gathering following at the Dominion Terrace Clubhouse.
