He was born September the 5th 1939 in Southport, NC. Anthony was the grandson of James Bascon and Janie Gray Clemmons. He retired from the United States Navy after 23 years of service. Later, he enrolled in the University of North Florida and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Addiction Counseling. In 1989, he returned to his Calabash roots. There he served the town for over 20 years, beginning as a Board Commissioner and ending with a 4 year run as Mayor. As an avid local historian, he wrote numerous books, booklets and even had some of his stories published in local newspapers. In his research, he saw his duty was to “shine a light on the overlooked.” Anthony was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Frances Waldrop Clemmons of Mannboro, Va., son, Donald Clemmons and his wife Joann Clemmons of Longs, S.C., daughter, Janie Clemmons of Wilmington, N.C., sister, Linda Rogers of Calabash and his favorite uncle, Billy Clemmons of High Point, N.C. He was preceded in death by his good friend Darrell Smith of Calabash.
Graveside services will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery on October 17, at 2pm. All are invited to attend. Anthony’s only request is for others to pray for the repose of his soul
