Gene was born on October 19, 1946, in Shallotte Point to Odell Hardee and Sarah Allene Leonard. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Merle. Gene graduated from Shallotte High School in May of 1965, and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country honorably for four years. He returned to Shallotte and married his sweetheart, Merle Gray Hawes, on October 4, 1969. Together they created a loving family and were truly soulmates. Gene spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement serving with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, Ocean Isle Beach Police Department, and the Bald Head Island Police Department. Upon retirement, he started P.I. and Associates and worked as a private investigator until his death. He was a man of great integrity, work ethic, and moral character. He was well respected and loved by those who knew him.
Left to cherish his life are his two children, Bradly Hardee and Heather Bath, and husband Sandy; grandchildren, Allisan Hardee, Tyler Hardee, Stephen Hardee, and Victoria Bath. He also leaves behind his three siblings, whom he loved dearly; Mary Milligan and husband Roy, Brenda Hewett, and Billy Hardee and wife, Barbara.
Those of us left behind grieve at his sudden passing but in our hearts know he longed to be reunited with his bride. We find comfort in knowing he is finally with her once again. He is at peace.
The family invites friends and loved ones to gather on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at 3:00 pm, for a graveside service at Galloway Memorial Cemetery on Big Macedonia Road with Reverend Robert Weathers officiating.
