Houston Howie, 76, of Shallotte, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2025. Houston was truly one of a kind—an unforgettable man who leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and stories that will be retold (and no doubt exaggerated) for generations to come.
Born on July 26, 1949, in Birmingham, Alabama, Houston never fit neatly into any box. He was a fun-loving eccentric with a gift for finding joy in the unexpected and turning everyday moments into tales worth retelling. His infectious laugh, unmatched sense of humor, and unique way of seeing the world made him unforgettable to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Houston was a devoted husband and father, a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Shallotte, and previously of Soncoast Community Church in Boca Raton, Florida. After a distinguished career as a telecom proposal engineer, he retired in 2003.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Kenneth Howie and Elizabeth Garner Howie. Houston is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judy Williams Howie; his children Donnell Lewis (Karen), Christopher Lewis, Allen Howie (Christine), Sarah Darter (Mark), and Laura Louis (Bill); and nine cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Richard Stancil (Becky), Jose Vera (Ada), and Peggy Logan; as well as special in-laws Rick Williams (Patricia), Nina Nethery, and Carol Williams; along with many nieces and nephews who will carry on his stories, laughter, and spirit.
A celebration of Houston’s life will be held at First Baptist Church, 4486 Main St., Shallotte, NC, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation for friends and family beginning at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tree of Life at First Baptist Church of Shallotte.
