

The family of Jonas Daugherty, 87, are saddened to announce his passing on February 14, 2026 in Shallotte, North Carolina. Jonas was the eldest son of the late Hillard and Elsie Daugherty (Strickland). He was born April 3, 1938 in New Harmony, Indiana.
Jonas graduated from Fletcher High School, Jacksonville Beach, FL in 1956 and entered the Navy shortly after high school serving aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) as an avionics technician. After leaving the Navy in 1962, Jonas settled in Westminster, Maryland and went to work at Black & Decker. During his time at Black & Decker, he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Johns Hopkins. Jonas moved his family to Northwest Connecticut in 1972 and held various positions in manufacturing management. Eventually he opened his own tool and die business and moved to Spanish Fort, Alabama in 1986. He grew his manufacturing business in Spanish Fort until he suffered a debilitating stroke in 1999.
Prior to his stroke, Jonas was extremely athletic and enjoyed sports. He was a member of the 1954 state champion basketball team from Fletcher High in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. In his senior year he was named to the All-State Basketball Team in Florida. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. He enjoyed golf and was a Pro-Am bowler with several perfect games to his credit. After suffering a stroke that left him totally blind, he continued to follow sports and listened faithfully to college football and basketball.
Jonas married the late Shirley Houck who blessed him with three children, Jonas Daugherty of Shallotte, NC, Brian Daugherty of Houston, TX, and Karen Daugherty of Winnsboro, SC. He later married Joan Williams who also preceded him in death. Jonas has 4 grandchildren Heather Furer (Jonas), Abby Schoenfeld (Jonas), Matthew Daugherty (Brian), and Kevin Daugherty (Brian) and 4 step grandchildren. His grandchildren have blessed him with 5 great grandchildren, and his step grandchildren have blessed him with another 6 step great grandchildren. Jonas is also survived by his brothers Jimmy (Coach) Daugherty and wife Alice of Jacksonville Beach, Florida and Alben Daugherty and wife Shirley of Smithfield, Virginia.
Jonas is remembered as someone who was always active, someone who could fix almost anything, an excellent mechanic, and a man of deep faith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sharon Methodist Church at 2030 Holden Beach Rd., Supply, North Carolina on February 28, 2026 starting with a family visitation at 1PM followed by a Celebration of Life at 2PM.
According to his wishes, he will be cremated and committed to the sea.
