Gregory Vance Charlton, age 74, passed away at his home in West Park, Florida on April 8, 2022. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland December 6, 1947, to the late Lt. Col. John Bealer Charlton and Doris (Guffin) Charlton. As a military dependent Greg moved often including stops in several states, as well as overseas in Puerto Rico, Japan, and Okinawa. An intellectually gifted child, Greg graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa at age 16; and, after his father’s transfer to the United States, enrolled in International Studies at Jacksonville State College in Alabama. After his freshman year, he transferred to Brigham Young University in Utah where he graduated with high honors in Latin (B.A.), with a minor in music. After a short stint teaching high school, he moved to Florida and was employed as business manager for the Greater Metropolitan Miami Opera, and for many years as an accountant with the US Postal Service in Miami, where he received numerous Certificates of Appreciation and Employee of the Year awards. Greg retired from the Postal Service at the end of 2013.
Greg was an accomplished linguist with a working knowledge of nine languages, teaching various ad hoc language courses. As an example of his passion for language and learning, and his exasperation with the English language, at age 15 he “created” his own, multi-volume language. His ability to sing, compose music, and play piano was embraced by many church choirs and community organizations to which he generously donated his talent. Greg was an avid genealogist documenting several family lines as far back as the early 1600s. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany for many years.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Valerie Charlton Blackwell (Mark) of Kentucky; his niece, Jessica Larson (Rob) of Massachusetts; nephews, John Blackwell (Erin) of Colorado, Paul Blackwell (Lisa) of Kentucky, and seven grand nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his companion of 38 years, Joe H. Boyd; his parents; nephew, Mark Charles Blackwell, Jr.; aunt, Elinorgrace Broshard (John); and uncle, Schuyler Guffin (Celia).
A family service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at the Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home in Shepherdsville, Kentucky followed by interment at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.
