Born on 11/12/1941 in Fairdale, Michael remained a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He was a man who “didn’t know a stranger” and often joked that he was related to everyone he met. A true enthusiast of speed, Michael was a lover of cars and anything that went fast. He also found great joy in the local tradition of visiting Churchill Downs to bet on the ponies.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Thelma (Johnson) Sweeney; two sons, Michael Patrick Sweeney Jr. and Eric Wilson; a grandson, Patrick Smiddy; and sister, Daisy Ritchey.
He leaves behind a large and loving family, including his wife, Norma Jean Sweeney and his children, Tammy Smiddy, Brian (Jennifer) Wilson, David Todd Sweeney, and Tiffany Wilson (Carl); two brothers, William (Frances) Sweeney and Teddy Sweeney; and a sister, Peggy (Billy) Hutchison.
His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Marcus Wilson, Carl Heissler III, Cameron Heissler, Gabrielle Mustard (Cody), Leah Schneidtmiller, Joyce Smiddy, and many more. He is also the proud great-grandfather of Alex, Izzy, Stephen, and Malachi.
Michael will be remembered as a man of character and warmth who loved his family above all else. Rest in peace, Dad: you will be missed and loved by many.
The funeral will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Hardy Close Funeral Home.
Visitation begins at 2 p.m. and continues until the time of service.
