A Service celebrating the life of Mrs. Bettye Jean McCullough Kappen will be held at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 7th at 10:00 in the morning. Dr. H. Murry Hodge, a dear friend from Summer Grove Baptist Church will officiate along with Bro. Billy Crosby singing “Beulah Land”. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service beginning at 9:00.
Mrs. Kappen was born on June 1, 1929 in Mansfield, Louisiana to Irma Jean Hobgood and James Roma McCullough. After graduating from Centenary College, she began a long career in education teaching countless numbers of students at North Highlands, Trinity Heights Christian Academy, and First Baptist Church School. Bettye thoroughly enjoyed studying God’s Word, as evidenced by her many years in Bible Study Fellowship, and teaching when called upon to the Friendship class of Summer Grove Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member. Naturally, she was a loving and devoted mother to her two sons, their wives, her three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Kappen was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Dr. Frank E. Kappen of Birmingham, Alabama. Those left to cherish her memory are Carlton Roberts and his wife, Lydia, along with his daughters, Katelyn and Courtney Roberts. Her second son, Brent Roberts and his wife, Bethany along with their daughter, Madeline and her husband, Andrew DeBlieux and their daughter, Vivienne Claire are also, left to cherish her memory. The joy little Vivienne brought to her ‘Ga’ will certainly be remembered by some of her brightest smiles these last few months. Bettye is also survived by many dear cousins, especially Sally Boswell and Patricia Cantrell, all of whom live in the Shreveport area and Houston, Texas.
We, the family, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of those who helped in Bettye’s care, in particular, the Live Oak Health Center Community of the North Pavilion. Dr. April Patton along with the nursing staff of Pam Cooper, Brittany Pettis, Ester McCauley, Doras Wilson, Kristin Trenor, and all those others who assisted with her comfort and care for the past seventeen months, we are forever grateful. We must also thank Debra Crump, Social Services Director, for her encouraging words, bright smile, and gentle hugs which always greeted us as we sought advice. Certainly, all those family and friends who visited and lifted Bettye up in prayer, there are no adequate words to express our thankfulness; we are indeed grateful for your sincere love, concern, and friendship.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made in her memory to Summer Grove Baptist Church.
Bettye was a beautiful, strong, and loving lady who taught us all so much about true abiding faith and love of family; she will forever be in our hearts.
