Barrett, as he was known by family and friends, was born on February 11, 1930, in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. He was raised along with two older brothers, by a widowed mother in a dog trot house built by his father in the small community of Red Land, Louisiana. He was only three months old when his father died and his lifelong wish was to get to know him, which has now come true with their heavenly reunion!
Barrett and his mother, Rubye, moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in his teenage years where he completed high school at Fair Park and then entered the Army and served in the Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. Due to his mother’s illness, he had to leave the service to take care of her which he did that faithfully until her death many years later.
Upon returning from the service, he married the girl from around the corner, Lois Lucas and they enjoyed 65 years of a loving marriage before her passing. Together they raised three daughters and a son.
Barrett loved camping and almost every summer as soon as school was out, he and the family would head west to Colorado in their Coleman pop-up trailer. There were many other camping trips across the United States, and he was the master at making soggy fries for breakfast on many of these trips. Later in life he and Lois discovered cruising, and he was the biggest fan of Alaskan cruises on Holland America which he enthusiastically told everyone about. They also co-hosted a trip to the Holy Land and Austria which was the trip of a lifetime.
He was known as Calvin in his professional life. He started out as a teller at First National Bank downtown while attending Centenary College at night. During this time, he also worked weekends at Weingarten’s and The Shreveport Gun Club while raising a young family. He worked his way up to branch manager at First National Bank before moving to Red River Valley Bank in Bossier. They were eventually bought out by Chase where he retired as Senior Vice President.
Throughout his career, he was always customer oriented and very well thought of by his clients. He served on many boards and organizations, among them, Shreveport Optimist Club, Bossier Lions Club, Queensborough Masonic Lodge and the Gideons, but his most valued service was in his church. He and Lois and their young family started at Lakeshore Baptist Church (where he and Lois married) and helped start Western Hills Baptist Church. Anytime the church doors were open, the family was there. He served as a deacon there as well as at First Baptist Blanchard and for many years at Trinity Heights Baptist Church. At Trinity Heights he was a Sunday School teacher to a Young, Married Adult Class, whom he and Lois loved. He was a mentor to many, some of whom grew to serve in their own capacities in church. At First Baptist Blanchard he taught an Experiencing God class. Through this class a young couple was led to become missionaries to Romania. Also, as a result of this class, an idea was formed to make a Prayer Garden. This was built by Barrett, his friend, Ted and many others, as well as a walking trail that is used to this day in Blanchard.
He was a man of great faith, loved to tell a joke, and always had a smile on his face. His love of all sweet things was legendary, especially Snickers and peanut clusters. He was a loving husband and father, always there for us. We were so blessed to have had such wonderful, Godly parents.
Barrett was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Lois, parents; Calvin and Rubye Hudson, brothers; James (Teedy) Hudson and Rex Hudson, Rubye (Sis) Litton-whom he considered his sister, son in laws; Larry Johnson, Tommy Angle and Pat Burroughs. He is survived by his children; Debbie Johnson, Sandy Johnson (Dwayne), Kim Pace (Gary) and Jason Hudson (Lee). Grandchildren; Heather Davis, Holly Davis, Chad Davis, Megan Cortez, Amber Cortez, Nicole Hudson and Calieb Hudson as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. P. V. Blanchard for over 50 years of care and the many caregivers who helped take care of Daddy through his long battle with Dementia. You loved our Daddy and helped to take away our worries. We girls will surely miss hearing him call us, Sugar and Jason, Bud. But we rejoice in knowing he is in Heaven and surely hearing from his Savior, “Well done thy good and faithful servant.”
Visitation and services will be at Trinity Heights Baptist Church on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Visitation will be from 12 PM to 1 PM with services to follow led by his nephew, Rev. Randy Johnson of Countryside Baptist, assisted by Dr. Scott Teutsch. Pallbearers will be Chase Davis, Tony Vergo, Calieb Hudson, Gary Pace, Mark Montgomery and Claude Baines. Honorary Pallbearers will be the “Blanchard Coffee Bunch.”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity Heights Baptist Church.
