Graveside Services for Dickie Smith, 74, will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 am. Pete King will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Honoring Dickie as pallbearers will be: Jack Canton, Rodney Simon, DeSoto Parish Fire District 1 Firefighters, Rust Canton, Thomas Houston, Walter Well, and Justin Erwin.
Dickie was born in Logansport, Louisiana to Sam C. Smith and Viola H. Moffett. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his time in the military, Dickie owned his own mechanic business for 30 years. After semi-retiring, he became the head diesel mechanic for DeSoto Parish Fire District 1. He was very involved in the community and a member of El Karuba Shrine, the Masonic Lodge of Greenwood, the Moose Lodge #2239, T.A.P., and BCA Pool League. Dickie enjoyed working on cars, shooting pool, hunting, and vacationing.
Dickie was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, and friend. His family was his pride and joy and he loved spending time with them. He especially enjoyed playing with his kids and grandkids and making his wife happy!!
Dickie was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, W.E. Smith. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sharon Smith; his children, Shawnee Barnhill, Tynder Smith, Dickie Derrick Smith (Natalie), and Destini Smith; his grandchildren, Chance Smith, Anna Barnhill Harrison, Marcus Smith, Ansleigh Smith, Ashton Smith, Addison Smith, Dawson Smith, and Wyatt Smith; his brother-in-law, Jimmy Mitchell (Karen); his stepmother, Bulah Smith; his siblings, Sam A. Smith, Don W. Smith, J.C. Smith, Connie Smith-Hall, Brenda Hudson, and Betty Ann; and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children and/or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the doctors and staff in MICU at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and Overton Brooks VA Medical Center.
