Joann (Frewin) Dowdall, 90, of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to her family. Born in Salamanca, New York, Joann led a full life dedicated to nurturing and supporting those she loved. She was a woman of many talents— a professional figure skater, a gifted artist with a passion for ceramics and china painting, and a loving, full-time housewife who created a warm and welcoming home. Joann’s boundless energy and commitment to her family were evident in all she did. Whether it was coaching basketball and softball, running her children and grandchildren to various sports events, or lending a hand wherever needed, Joann’s dedication knew no bounds. She was always at the heart of every family gathering, creating lasting memories and ensuring everyone felt included and loved.
Joann had a vibrant and joyful spirit that extended beyond her family life. Her love for skating was more than just a hobby; it was a passion that brought her joy and allowed her to inspire others. Her creativity shone through in her artwork, especially in ceramics and china painting, where she displayed a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for beauty. As a coach, she was patient and encouraging, always fostering teamwork and sportsmanship among her players. As a mother and grandmother, she instilled the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance in everyone she touched. She was a tireless caregiver who balanced the roles of mother, grandmother, and friend with grace, showing up for every occasion and milestone, big or small. Joann’s greatest joy was her family, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment to them.
She is survived by her children: James (Peggy), John (Julie), and Christy (Daniel); her sister Rose (AJ); her brother John; her grandchildren: Mellisa, James (Cherie), Courtney (Aaron), Cody, Katie (Travis); and her great-grandchildren: Haley, Ayden, Ethan, Jolee, Claire, Seth, and Baby Kotzur. She also leaves behind her nephews Greg (Erin and Evan) and Boone (Kim, Annabelle, Gracie, Mary, Catherine), and Jake. Joann was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roger; her daughter Cathy; her parents Norm (Cecelia); her brother Norm and sister-in-law Sue; and her granddaughter Tiffany.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana. A celebration of Joann's life will follow with a Graveside service at 3:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Park, also located at 8801 Mansfield Road.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mathew Dowdall, Ethan Dowdall, Ayden Dowdall, Cody Cole, Aaron Porterfield, and Travis Kotzur.
