

A memorial service celebrating the life of John Joseph Harter, Sr., 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Northwest Louisiana Veteran’s Cemetery in Keithville, LA. Visitation will held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
Jack was born on June 1, 1924 in Buffalo, NY and passed away on September 14, 2012 in Shreveport, LA. Mr. Harter was a member of St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church and served on the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree Knight. He served his country proudly and valiantly in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and is a survivor of four invasions including Iwo Jima. Mr. Harter was also a member of the Marine Corps League and Telephone Pioneers. Jack was a very family oriented man and was proud of all his 10 children as well as many grand and great grandchildren. The family remembers how he always attended any functions that his children or grandchildren were involved in because he loved them so much. He enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge with family and friends.
Preceding Mr. Harter in death was his mother, father and one sister.
Left to cherish beautiful memories of Jack is his wife of 64 years, Mary Jane Harter; children, Jeannine Harter-Dennis(George), Mary Patricia Alford, Dennis John Harter(Dorothy), Cheryl Anne Jones(Robert), Kathleen Anne Shepherd(Ron), Sue Anne Gauthier(Joseph), Tammy Lee Hendrickson(Luke), John Joseph Harter, Jr.(Lesley), James Andrew Harter(Marsha) and Paul Francis Harter(Aimee); one sister, Dorothea Johnson(Tom); one brother, James Harter(Georgia). Mr. Harter is also survived by numerous beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Marine Corps League, 550 South Audubon Road, Indianapolis, IN 46219.
