

Lawana Slade DeLaune passed from this life on June 20, 2017 at age 93. Lawana was born in Jackson, Mississippi on October 7, 1923. She was the second of four girls born to Julian Slade and Gladys Larsen Slade. Her young life was spent in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She proudly served in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II. Shortly after the war she met and married Anthony James DeLaune on June 30, 1946. Their 49 years together were spent in Shreveport, Louisiana. Lawana worked for the Caddo Sheriff’s Department and served in leadership with the Girl Scouts of America.
In 2010 Lawana moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where she enjoyed life among family and a large group of friends. She returned to Shreveport in 2016 and happily lived out her days at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Bossier City.
Lawana is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Marceline Davis all of Pascagoula, MS and her beloved husband Anthony affectionately known as “Pone”.
She is survived by sisters Janis Langston of Pascagoula, MS and Judy Mone and her husband Fred of Williamsburg, VA. She is also survived by her daughters, LaLette Fletcher and husband John of Shreveport, LA and Marceline Runyan and husband Dan of Broken Arrow, OK. Also among her survivors are her grandchildren Dr. Brandon Venden and wife Leslie of Shreveport, LA; Jennifer Cook and husband Merlin of Harelton, TX; Noel Runyan and Frances Runyan both of Broken Arrow, OK; four great-grandchildren, Cameron and MacKenzie Burcham, Hartley Venden, and Bittany Ingram and husband Don; and two great great grandchildren.
Affectionately known as “Gawannie”, her zest for life touched everyone around her. She was an inspiration to many, and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 22 from 4 – 6 pm at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, followed by recitation of the holy rosary. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 23 at 1pm. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery.
