

Predeceasing her were her parents: Elijah and Addie Gates of Sikes, Louisiana; one brother: E.C. (Jack) Gates of West Monroe; three sisters: Vera Gates of Sikes, Louisiana, Aline Reynolds of Dallas, Texas, and Elaine Culver of Sikes, Louisiana; and her first husband: James Floyd (Sonny) Bass of Jonesboro, Louisiana.
Mrs. Jordan was born on April 26, 1928, in Sikes, Louisiana, to Elijah Cicero Gates and Addie Simmons Gates. She attended Sikes School as a child and was graduated from Gaars Mill High School in 1945. She was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church as a child and young adult.
She was married to James Floyd (Sonny) Bass of Winnfield in 1948, and they lived most of their lives together in Jonesboro, Louisiana. Together they managed department stores in Winnfield during the 1960’s and their own business in Jonesboro during the 1970’s. She was predeceased by him in 1983.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by the children of this union: Olivia and Mike Alford of Frisco, Texas; Lanora and Gary Holler of Pennsylvania; and Cheryl and Denny Reed of Winnfield, Louisiana. Her surviving grandchildren are Michael Floyd Alford of Phoenix, Arizona; Courtne and Terry Hauser of Pennsylvania; and Tambry and Sam Slavich of New Orleans, Louisiana. Great-grandchildren include Luke and Gracie Hauser of Pennsylvania.
On August 16, 1997, she married James Van Jordan of Shreveport, Louisiana, where they were active members of Woodridge Baptist Church. Survived by her second husband, they just celebrated their fourteenth wedding anniversary. Survivors of her stepfamily include stepchildren: Kathryn and Tom Cadenhead of Denton, Texas, and Mark Jordan of Martinsburg, West Virginia; step-grandchildren: Amy and Jeff Smith of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Sara and Bob Dorby of Denton, Texas; and Erin Cadenhead of Denton, Texas; and one step great-grandchild: Caden Smith of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Other survivors include a twin sister and her spouse, Earline and Lewis Hickman of Shreveport, Louisiana, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Mrs. Jordan enjoyed traveling, visiting with her family, and attending church services and church activities on a regular basis at Woodridge Baptist Church in Shreveport. She was an enthusiast at gardening, canning, and preserving, and she had a passion for quilting and crocheting.
Visitation for Mrs. Jordan will be held at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home in Shreveport on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Woodridge Baptist Church of Shreveport on Monday, August 29, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Floyd Davis, Jr., pastor, will direct the services, and pallbearers will be Roger Rossett, Alton Johnson, Jeff Cole, John Kish, Rodney Schepp, and Marlon Langford. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Woodridge Baptist Church.
Services and internment will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Sikes, Louisiana, Mrs. Jordan’s childhood church. Pastor Michael Green will direct these services, and pallbearers will be Randy Shell, Bob Erskins, Stephen Gardner, Danny Green, Rodrick Reynolds, and Bob Dorby, Jr. .
The family of Mrs. Jordan expresses its appreciation to the congregation of Woodridge Baptist Church for the constant prayers, love, and support shown during this time and to the staff of Grace Home of Shreveport for the compassionate and respectful care for their loved one. In lieu of flowers, donations made in the memory of Mrs. Murline Jordan to the building fund at Woodridge Baptist Church will be appreciated.
