He was born in Coushatta, LA on January 14, 1938, to Jim Thomas and Annie Lee Thomas. He grew up in Holly Springs, LA, where he was loved by everyone who knew him. He belonged to the Methodist Church and was a devoted Christian his 80 years of life. He was a very hard worker and a jack-of-all-trades, starting as a young boy picking up trash onside the highway for the Louisiana Department of Highway Patrol for a dollar. He believed in being early for every and all events.
Upon graduation from Martin High School in Martin, LA, he went to work for the governor in Natchitoches in 1956. He worked for the Paper Company before going into the trucking industry for 20 years working at many companies throughout the years, spending most of them at Red Ball Motor Freight, Inc. He was also a teamster member. After retiring, he worked at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home for over 13 years. He never met a stranger and loved serving others. He instilled in his family the value of honesty, working hard, supporting your family, kindness, and serving God and church always.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 41 years, Barbara N. Thomas; daughters, Martha Carson (Andrew), Melinda Banks (Dave), Diane Frey Moore (Robbie); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one sister, Vernell Ayers. To his granddaughter, Amy Henson, he was the greatest man she ever knew.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jimmy Lee Thomas and A.R. Thomas; and nephew A.R. Thomas Jr.
Family would like to express special thanks to The Chateau at Montclair, Willis Knighton Hospice, and the staff at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home for all the care given.
