Amos Brown, Jr. was born on February 24, 1935, in Williamston, North Carolina, to the late May Pearl Evans and the late Amos Brown, Sr. He was the eldest of four siblings.
Amos graduated from E.J. Hayes High School in Williamston, North Carolina, in 1953. He briefly attended North Carolina A&T State University before answering the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1954. After four years of honorable service, he was discharged with the rank of Airman First Class.
Following his military service, Amos resumed his education at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He later continued his academic and spiritual journey by earning a Master of Arts degree in Practical Theology from Regent University in 2004.
Amos was united in holy matrimony to Mary P. Brown on April 22, 1962. Their loving union, spanning nearly 64 years, was blessed with two children, Kevin and Kimberly. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who loved his family deeply and was often sought for wisdom and guidance. Amos enjoyed cheering for the Washington Commanders, picking up a dozen donuts after Sunday church, traveling throughout the United States and abroad with his beloved wife, and most of all, savoring Mary’s home-cooked meals.
Amos began his professional career as a bookkeeper with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. After several years, he transitioned into the finance division at IBM in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he started as a Senior Accountant and advanced through various staff and management roles. He often spoke highly of IBM, once saying, “Quality is a part of IBM’s fabric. I’ve learned to think quality in everything I do. It’s part of my make-up now.” Following the acquisition of his Federal Sector division of IBM in 1994, Amos continued his work with Lockheed Martin in a similar capacity. He retired from corporate finance in 2000 after six additional years of service, earning numerous accolades that reflected his commitment to excellence, accuracy, and integrity.
Amos faithfully served the body of Christ for more than 62 years, combining his expertise in business, education, and finance with his deep spiritual devotion. At Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, he was recognized for his leadership, biblical knowledge, and dedication to the Men’s Fellowship from 1986 to 2000 by Senior Pastor Leon Grant. That same year, he received the Distinguished Service Award for his many years of his good and faithful service as Chair of the Board of Finance. Amos also served as a MoneyLife Mentor and Journey to True Financial Freedom seminar instructor through Crown Financial Ministries for 27 years, helping individuals and churches achieve financial peace through biblical principles. His passion was to assist local churches and individuals in learning, applying God’s financial principles so that they may know Christ, live faithfully, and steward their resources in service to God. He believed the need for financial literacy founded on biblical principles could not be over emphasized.
Amos had a remarkable gift for making every person he encountered feel valued and seen. When he spoke with you, he gave his full attention, and even in a room filled with many, he had a way of making each individual feel as though they were the only person that mattered in that moment. Yet, as people observed him engage others with the same warmth and focus, they realized that this was simply who Amos was—consistently kind, genuinely interested, and gracious to everyone. He had a way of uplifting those around him, often closing conversations by warmly referring to men as “gentlemen and scholars,” leaving a lasting impression of dignity, respect, and heartfelt connection wherever he went. He also expressed his love for his family in personal and meaningful ways, giving each of his grandchildren a special nickname: Marcus, “The Educator,” Kenya, “His Princess,” Leonard, Jr. (LJ), “The Accountant,” and Joshua, “Speedy.”
Amos answered the call of his Heavenly Father on March 21, 2026, as his earthly work was declared complete. Having fought the good fight and finished his course, he welcomed the crown for which he had worked so hard to attain. He now rests in eternal peace in the presence of the Lord he faithfully served.
Amos leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Mary P. Brown; his son, Kevin (Linda) of Clarksburg, Maryland; his daughter, Kimberly (Leonard, Sr.) of Bowie, Maryland; four grandchildren, Marcus, Kenya, Leonard, Jr., and Joshua; his beloved aunt, Marie Roberts of Williamston, North Carolina, age 99; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Amos leaves us with these words:
“No matter what we have done in the past, when God forgives, He meets us right where we are and gives us the power to change. No matter how far we have run or where we have come from, God covers us in heaven where we are.”
