Andrew Allan Zvara passed away on February 3, 2025. Andy was born in Lorain, Ohio, on May 16, 1941, the second oldest of five siblings. As a child he ran away from kindergarten, but he would eventually find his home and career in education.
From high school through graduate school Andy blossomed as a student, athlete, actor, and leader. It was at Oberlin College that he found his lifelong friends and love of his life. At Oberlin Andy embodied the scholar/athlete, lettering in football and lacrosse. He continued his education at the University of Maryland earning a masters and completing course work toward a doctorate in Philosophy.
His greatest accomplishment was his 60-year marriage to Marcia (Rhone) Zvara and the family they created with their daughter Terra Zvara. Marcy and Andy were partners, best friends, sports enthusiasts, and traveled a lot of the world together. Andy challenged himself athletically and intellectually throughout his life completing marathons, Outward Bound, as president of his local Rotary Club, attending the Aspen Insitute, as a torch bearer for the 1996 Summer Olympics, staying with the Waorani People in Ecuador, building the family deck, and reading too many books to count in a lifetime.
Andy and Marcy moved to Detroit, MI as newlyweds and later moved to the Washington, DC area; eventually settling in Silver Spring, MD. After several years of teaching in the DC Public Schools, Marcy submitted an application on his behalf to Town and Country Day School for a teaching position. Andy would go on to become the headmaster of the school; growing it from pre-k-8th grade to pre-k-12th grade and becoming The Newport School. He thrived at T&C/Newport. Known to his students as Mr. Z, those years were full of lesson plans, staff meetings, school carnivals, plays, athletics, professional growth, and weekend faculty basketball. As a second generation American, he took great pride in the diversity T&C/Newport embodied in its ideas, culture, languages, and people. His students and staff should know he was immensely proud of their accomplishments and passions. Nothing they did was too small or too large for him to celebrate and proudly boast about.
Andy is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Mary (Simko) Zvara, sister Carol Kiraly, and triplet infant sons. He is survived by his loving wife (Marcy) and daughter (Terra), siblings Rebecca Demich, David Zvara, and Valerie Matthews, and multiple generations of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
As is well known, Andy was not without his health struggles in his later years. His grace and determination in weathering every new illness or orthopedic issue are legendary. We can safely say that he arrives in the afterlife having fully lived, loved, and inspired with his drive to never quit. His family is extremely grateful for the support of friends and family through this time, all the medical professionals that treated and listened to him, and especially thankful for the physical therapists, nurses, and aides who cared for him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting, in his honor, Dad/Andy's greatest passion, Oberlin College.
