He was born in Nam Dinh, Vietnam on November 2, 1945 to Mr. Gian T. Duong and Mrs. Van T. Vu. He graduated with honors from Vietnam's most prestigious engineering school with a degree in industrial engineering, then became an instructor there. He served for 7 years in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) during the war, reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He also taught physics courses at the National Military Academy in Dalat. As Vietnam fell to communism, he escaped Saigon in 1975 to start a new life in the U.S.
Toan's first paycheck in America was earned while he was a cook in Landover, MD. At “Porch on the Mall” restaurant, he quickly fell in love with Coca-Cola, and savored this fine American beverage until his final day of life. He then found employment with the Montgomery County Government, while also pursuing advanced studies at the University of Maryland. In fact, he enjoyed a rewarding 32 year career working for the county, the majority of this time as a senior computer systems analyst. With his intelligence and aptitude for problem-solving, he excelled at this position, earning several awards during his esteemed career.
Toan had a sharp, witty way with words and song lyrics that brought unbridled eruptions of laughter to those around him. He had an extraordinarily kind, loyal, and generous spirit. Truly, he had one real passion in life: frequent gatherings with family and friends, to enjoy food and drink, long conversations, and the warm company of others, even through his final days. After all, Toan was genuinely grateful to America for affording his family a life of freedom and opportunity.
Toan's spirit lives on through his loving wife of 49 years Baokinh, sons Lan and Vu, grandchildren An and Vi, his brother Hoan, and his sister Anh.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family prefers donations be made to the Ruesch Center for the Cure of Gastrointestinal Cancers at Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer Center, in the memory of Toan T. Duong:
