Carmen M Córdova

April 18, 1937 – February 4, 2025

Carmen Milagros Córdova was born in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, on April 18, 1937. She is the tenth daughter of eleven children. Carmen met the love of her life, Nathaniel de Lieban Córdova at Central High School in Santurce, Puerto Rico, upon the sharing of an accounting book.

Carmen's family moved to New York immediately after her high school graduation. It is in New York that she began a long-lived career as a medical secretary. Nathaniel followed shortly after and they soon got married on July 25, 1958, at The Nativity of Our Lord Church, on 8th Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan.

In 1959, they moved back to Puerto Rico, where they started their family. Carmen and Nathaniel have been married for 66 years and have five children: Victor Manuel, Maria de Lourdes, Nathaniel Isidro (RIP), Edel Mary, and Kateri Marie. Through the years the family has grown to include 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Carmen and Nathaniel are devoted Catholics and have been in service to the Archdiocese of Washington since 1985 when they became residents of Maryland. In her twenty-five years as a parishioner of the Shrine of St. Jude Catholic Church, Carmen enjoyed being a catechist, flower arranger, and marriage counselor. In this role, Carmen, together with Nathaniel, who is also a Deacon in the church, has prepared over 115 couples for the sacrament of marriage.

At Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, Carmen was a Lector and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. It has been the honor of her life to serve the church alongside of being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

Carmen passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 4, 2025, after battling cancer. She was characterized by her sweet nature and kind disposition. She loved life and people and opened her arms to everyone. She will be greatly missed, and she leaves an emptiness in the hearts of all who have been touched by her love.

Carmen Milagros Córdova nació en la Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, el 18 de abril de 1937. Es la décima hija de once hermanos. Carmen conoció al amor de su vida, Nathaniel de Lieban Córdova, en la Escuela Superior Central en Santurce, Puerto Rico, al compartir un libro de contabilidad.

La familia de Carmen se mudó a Nueva York inmediatamente después de su graduación de la escuela superior. Fue en Nueva York donde comenzó una larga carrera como secretaria médica. Nathaniel lo siguió poco después y pronto se casaron el 25 de julio de 1958, en la Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestro Señor, en la calle 8 y la 2da Avenida en Manhattan.

En 1959, regresaron a Puerto Rico, donde formaron su familia. Carmen y Nathaniel han estado casados durante 66 años y tuvieron cinco hijos: Víctor Manuel, María de Lourdes, Nathaniel Isidro (q.e.p.d.), Edel Mary y Kateri Marie. A lo largo de los años, la familia ha crecido hasta incluir 16 nietos y tres bisnietos.

Carmen y Nathaniel son católicos devotos y han estado al servicio de la Arquidiócesis de Washington desde 1985, cuando se convirtieron en residentes de Maryland. En los veinticinco años como feligresa del Santuario San Judas Tadeo, Carmen disfrutó de ser catequista, arreglista de flores y consejera matrimonial. En este papel, Carmen, junto con Nathaniel, que también es diácono en la iglesia, ha preparado a más de 115 parejas para el sacramento del matrimonio.

En la Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción en Washington, DC, Carmen fue una Lectora y Ministro Extraordinario de la Eucaristía. Ha sido el honor de su vida servir a la iglesia además de ser una amorosa esposa, madre, abuela y amiga para muchos.

Carmen falleció pacíficamente el martes 4 de febrero de 2025, después de luchar contra el cáncer. Se caracterizaba por su naturaleza dulce y su carácter amable. Amaba la vida y a las personas y abría sus brazos a todos. La echaremos mucho de menos, y deja un vacío en los corazones de todos los que han sido tocados por su amor.
