Demetris M. Spanou passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Demetris was born on the beautiful island of Cyprus. At a young age he was sent by his parents to London where he began working at his brother's restaurant. Eventually, he went to trade school and became a barber.
While working at a hair salon, he met his beautiful wife, Kay, and their love story began. They were married in 1966. In 1971, they decided to join her parents who had recently immigrated to the United States to begin their life together and start a family. They had two children, Michael and Andrea.
Demetris was a distinguished barber in Washington, DC. He had the honor of cutting hair for many prominent politicians, television newsmen, and lobbyists. However, it didn’t matter who it was, he treated all his clients the same. They meant everything to him and the connections he built created many life long friends. Louis’ Barber Shop was a home away from home where he worked six days a week for over 50 years.
Demetris was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His grandchildren; Max, Kay, and George were his pride and joy. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, watching soccer matches, and family vacations to the beach.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kay; his son, Michael; and daughter, Andrea.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 from 11-12 noon at St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 721 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
