Hsin-Auo Ho was born in 1934 in Xinying, a rural town located in Taiwan. As the youngest girl in a large family of nine, her upbringing was riddled with financial and societal hardships. With the more traditional norms of these times, women were regarded as less valuable than men. Despite the adversity she faced as a young woman, she later changed her name to Hsin-Auo - translating to “lucky girl”.
Hsin-Auo met Miao Chiang and later welcomed her first and only son, Don, into the world. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1976, with a brand new beginning in Washington D.C. For several years, she held various jobs as a nanny, caretaker and cook – diligently working and saving enough to support her family. All of her hard earned efforts were dedicated to her son in support of his early years and education. With the passing of her husband, Miao Chiang, in 1997, she later moved to Northern Virginia to live with her son and his wife Rebecca.
In 1997, Hsin-Auo became an “Ahma” (grandma). Her grandchildren were the center of her life. Likewise, Ahma became their whole world. Hsin-Auo loved to cook, and she was a true natural. Each day she would begin cooking dinner at 4 pm - showering her family with love through food. Despite her humble beginnings, Ahma was especially generous, and always eager to share her spectacular dishes with neighbors and friends. Each of her grandchildren grew a special bond with their Ahma, and feel blessed to be able to share the many years and memories of her in their home.
By virtue of Ahma, her grandchildren were able to learn and practice Mandarin with her in their home. Most importantly, Ahma effortlessly emulated the qualities of a strong work ethic, selflessness, humility and generosity. These values were often not displayed through words, but through her everyday actions.
Anyone who met Hsin-Auo could feel her welcoming presence, her kind soul, and unwavering authenticity. For someone who came from so little, she had the biggest heart.
Hsin-Auo is survived by her son, Don Chiang, daughter in-law, Rebecca, stepchildren Yeh-Lan, Kuo Ching, Joseph, and three grandchildren, Anna, Kristine and Noreen.
Please join us in honoring Hsin-Auo Ho in remembrance. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 9:30 – 11:30 A.M. at Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home.
