John died on September 22, 2015 in Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of the late Geraldine "Deinie" McElhinney; loving father of Ruth Elaine McElhinney and Barbara Jill (Alan) Payne; adored grandfather of Chester Lawrence Garner, II, James Keith Garner and Laura Jane (Richard, Jr.) Williams; devoted great-grandfather of 25 great-grandchildren. John worked at Naval Research Laboratory as a Nuclear Physicist managing a research division. He was also a Life Master bridge player. Friends may call at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904 on Sunday, September 27, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with additional visitation on Monday, September 28, 2015 at 11 a.m. Funeral services will be on Monday at 12 noon.
