I had Mr. Mamana for ninth grade English in 1964 at the Washington NJ High School on Carlton Avenue, Washington, NJ.  We read A Tale of Two Cities.  He made it come alive.  It was the only book we ever read in high school in any class.  No other teacher did this in any English class throughout high school that I had.  Mr. Mamana was a class act, a wonderful teacher.  I was 14, and I guess he was around 27/28 years old.  He used to tease me and my ninth grade boyfriend, Dick Fehr.  Mr. Mamana came to my house and talked to my parents.  I am sure he was  trying to convince them I should go to college.  Unfortunately for me, I didn't have good parents; they not love me nor want anything for me.   I am sure he left disappointed knowing he couldn't help me.  No one could.  I went on to live an ordinary life because I didn't go to college; but, if Mr. Mamana had had his way, I would have gone to college and been successful.  He tried and no other teacher ever did that for me.  Pick your parents well.    

If this is the "Mr. Mamana" who taught English at Washington High School, Washington, NJ, I am very sorry to hear of his passing.  I've been thinking about him as he came to my home to talk to my mother about me.  He was the only teacher who ever cared enough to do that, and I believe he cared about me as a student.  He used to tease me and my boyfriend in class.  Mr. Mamana would have been about 26 when he taught my class.  He was the best teacher we ever had in any class in any year.  He had us read in class and went over "A Tale of Two Cities" and made it come to life.  No other English teacher went over any book with us throughout high school, only Mr. Mamana.  I was going to try to look him up when I found this obituary.  So sorry I didn't look sooner.  I wanted to tell him how great he was and what he meant to me looking back now as a senior citizen.  I wish my mother had listened to him.  He had higher hopes for me than she did.    

I've known Joe for more than 35 years as we had both a professional and personal relationship. He was a wonderful man, who kept life in focus with his love of family.  In one's life, it is not unusual to sort out a few people who have had a lasting impact, be it grandiose or humble.  Thank you Joe. To Mary Lou and the children, I share your loss as I will always see Joe's smiling face.

I grieve with you, feel the deep pain of your loss, and pray that the Peace of God will comfort you all in the midst of your grief.  And I pray Joe’s love, amazing strength, good memories and life stories you created together as a family will stay in your hearts as a blessed gift forever.
