Born the fifth of nine children to the late Dr. Herbert Vincent McKnight and Alma Maye McKnight in Washington, DC, Julian discovered a passion for photography early in life. A cherished possession throughout the years was his Kodak Instamatic camera, a Christmas gift that sparked a creative journey spanning six decades.
Julian graduated in 1972 from the Lieutenant Joseph P. Kennedy Institute in Washington, D.C., where he starred as the point guard on the Varsity basketball team and was known for his deadly two-handed jump shot. He later attended the Atlanta College of Art, where he further developed his skills in landscape and portrait photography.
Professionally, Julian worked for many years as a photography lab manager at Ritz Camera and other companies. Personally, he was the heart behind countless family milestones, capturing life’s most meaningful moments with care, intention, and love.
Julian adored his wife, Concepcion (Connie), and their daughter, Zoe, above all else. He lovingly called Zoe his “Miracle Baby,” a joy born later in life. His favorite subject to photograph was Zoe playing soccer—images that now serve as treasured memories for the family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Connie McKnight, and their daughter, Zoe A. McKnight. Julian also leaves behind his siblings: Dr. John E. McKnight, Herbert V. McKnight, Jr., Esq. (Cindy), Dr. Alice A. Garner (Tim), Albert J. McKnight (Crystal), Thomas M. McKnight, Dr. Timothy J. McKnight (Sandy), along with a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his older sisters, Leslie Yates and JoAnne McKnight.
The funeral service will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10 am at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 805 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906. Arrangements are by Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, Silver Spring, MD.
The family wishes to thank the many physicians, nurses, technicians, and therapists at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital who provided exceptional professional and compassionate care during Julian’s months of treatment and hospitalization.
Julian will be remembered for his gentle spirit, creative brilliance, and unwavering devotion to his family.
