Thank you for the wonderful legacy you left by raising outstanding children. They bring light to the world in so many ways. We are grateful for Carolyn and we love her. May you rest in peace, my beloved brother.

I miss my brother, but it comforts me to have attended his funeral.  Everything about it was excellent, and worthy of his memory.  Thank you to all the relatives who made it possible.   His legacy lives on through your good works and kindness.  

To The Laney family,

I am very thankful The Most High allowed me to cross paths with Dr.Laney. Dr Laney was a friend who was very inspirational in guiding me to study my roots of where I came from.  I truly enjoyed our meetings over the years which included World History, many of his personal stories and his achievements. Dr. Laney  was an encouragement and mentor to me.


At this time of great loss, I  pray the Most High's compassion on the Laney Family as you mourn and reflect the awesome life  Dr. Laney lived as a Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend to all who came into his path.

I will miss Dr. Mel very much. Talked with him daily for decades. Years ago we took him to all the places around St. George and Zion. Worked with him on his family history.

When I was a child, people always asked me if my Father was the owner of Laney's Barber Shop.  I replied that my Brother Mel was the barber. They said, "How can you have a Brother who is old enough to be a barber?"  I told them that Mel was the youngest barber ever licensed in Maryland, and that he could do anything he pleased.   Mel was 12 years older, so he left home while I was still young.  When he returned to Maryland,  he continued to do everything he pleased,  pursing his doctoral degree and being active in the business world.  Carolyn was always beautiful and talented and their children were an Aunt's dream.  

     Melvin was my big brother. I think of him every time I see the large scar on my right knee: We were 4 and 5 years old, playing in the garden, in Riverdale, Md. I fell on a pile of clinkers leaving a ragged gash. He picked me up and carried me on his back into the house so our mother could attend to the bleeding. I was glad to have a strong big brother to help me that day.
