Michael “Mike” Kaltman, a devoted grandfather, beloved husband, father, brother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at the age of 85. A man of deep passion, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to family, Mike leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, tradition, and curiosity.
Born in New York City in 1940 to Herman and Betty Kaltman, Mike was the devoted brother to Charlie Kaltman. He attended Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in history and city planning. He spent the majority of his career as a proud civil servant working for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He retired in 2006.
Mike was known for having many interests. He was an avid amateur genealogist and a stamp collector. He was President of the Society of Israel Philatelists from 1998 to 2000. He loved to travel the world with his devoted wife, Gail, relishing in finding sites of Jewish significance wherever they went. He found purpose in creating community and contributing his time and energy to serve the organizations that were important to him. He was a very active member of Temple Beth Ami as well as his condo community in Fallsgrove.
The beautiful art in his home and each of his children’s homes is a testament to his talent as an oil painter. He had begun painting as a teenager, proudly winning a John Nagy art contest run by a New York City television show called Learn to Draw.
Most importantly, Mike was a family man. He adored his two children and especially his four grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to attend a performance or a baseball, basketball, and field hockey game.
He is survived by his beloved wife Gail who tirelessly cared for him as he experienced increasing difficulties from Parkinson’s Disease. He is also survived by his two children, Jonathan and Stacey, as well as his daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Rebecca and Jay, who he welcomed into his family with love and pride. His four adoring grandchildren, Madeline, Jacob, Joshua and Ryan, will carry forward his spirit of devotion, creativity, and curiosity. He is also survived by his brother, Charles.
In remembering, Mike, we celebrate a life fully lived. May his memory be a blessing.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 12:30pm at the chapel at the Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, 14321 Comus Rd, Clarksburg, MD 20871
