Nancy “Tina” Allen Nelson, of Silver Spring, MD, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on December 12, 2024, at the age of 84 following a long battle with chronic medical issues following surgery.
Tina was born and raised in Darby, PA, daughter to William and Nancy (Johnson) Allen. She attended Darby High School and pursued an education at Penn State University. After taking time off to be a stay-at-home mom, Tina ultimately graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Maryland and went on to work at NIH as a Medical Technologist for 25 years, until she retired in 2012. Tina loved her profession and the lasting friendships she formed there.
Tina was an amazing, loving, and dedicated mother. She married Richard (Rick) Y. Nelson, Jr. in 1961 and they were married for 63 years and have five children together, Dr. Michael (Karen) Nelson, Michele Young, Cherie Nelson, Gregg (Claire) Nelson and Nancy (Hector) Ortiz. She especially loved her role as Nana and was a loving and devoted grandmother to seven grandchildren, Taylor and Jordan Young, Victoria and Max Nelson, Taiyo and Nikko Nelson and Joshua Ortiz. Additionally, she was a cherished great grandmother to Joseph Young.
Tina loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family and especially enjoyed Sunday family dinners. She also enjoyed knitting, needlepoint and crochet projects. Tina adopted and cared for a number of cherished cats over the years who brought her so much joy, comfort companionship and unconditional love. She loved having many birds in the backyard and ensured the bird feeders were filled, year-round. She had a great love for animals and was dedicated to the care and welfare of all animals. Tina was an active member of our family church, Transfiguration Episcopal Church in Silver Spring, MD. She served the Church community faithfully and was a dedicated member of the Altar Guild until her illness prevented her from continuing.
Tina’s passing has left an enormous void in the lives and hearts of her family, friends and loved ones. The depth of love and happiness she shared will forever remain in our hearts.
In honoring Tina’s wishes, a private committal service will be held for the family.
