

Rolando Gambala Hayag , endeared as “Kuya” or “Ka Rolly”, was born on February 5, 1938 in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite. He passed away peacefully on May 19, 2024, at the age of 86 years old. He was one of 12 siblings. His parents, Marciano (late) and Pacita (late) Hayag worked very hard to provide their children a bright future. Upon graduating in 1959 with a degree in Nautical Engineering, he enlisted in the United States Navy at Sangley Point, Cavite, Philippines. He was charmed by a high school teacher Norma Icaza (late) and they were married in 1964 in Cavite. They were blessed with 5 children: Rockefeller, Regidor, Rosanna, Rodora, and Romanita. Rolando was stationed in San Diego, CA, Washington DC, Norfolk, VA, and on various Navy vessels that toured Europe. He retired from the Navy in 1980. He brought the family to live in the Philippines after retirement. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Naic University in 1984. After 3 years, the family returned to Maryland when political unrest erupted in the Philippines in 1984. He worked as a Chef on the Presidential Yacht, Sequoia and also worked as Assurance Support for Cuban refugees at St Elizabeths Hospital. Later in life, Rolando married Rodelia San Miguel. Rolando was an active member and a Deacon of the Iglesia Ni Cristo Church. Rolando was gifted with a beautiful voice as he sang his favorite songs “And I love you so “and “Feelings “at family and church events. He will be best remembered for his smile, generosity, kindness, and commitment to his family. He adored his sisters Nel (Ed), Del (Don late), Belinda (late), Mel (late) (Rob), and Gigi (Jan)and also adored his brothers Ruding (late) (Luding (late)(Janet), Romy (Dely (late)(Neneng), Ting (Nene (late), Tic (late) (Liwanag) Rod (Maria)and Ceasar (late). His love for his grandchildren: Joanne, Nathan, Clarissa, Jacob, Justin, Jordan, and Kayla; was paramount as he never missed their birthdays whether near or far. His pride and joy was his great granddaughter Ella who seems to have inherited her Grandpa’s wit and charm. He also loved his daughter-in-laws Mary Ann and Joy and his son-in-laws Jerry (late) and Jalil, and his grandson in law Ejay. His wife and his children will remember him as loving, protective, full of energy and zeal for life, and most importantly they will treasure and remember his dedication to serving our Lord God Almighty.
