To the Family of Ruth Shigley,

Diana and I were dear friends of both Ruth and Russel Shigley. For years I worked with Russel in the Deacon’s Ministry and for years Diana worked with Ruth in the Hospitality Ministry. Our friendships developed both on a personal level and in serving together in the ministries. Ruth and Russel were people of integrity, generous and who loved God. We grieve with you in your loss. 

There are dozens of personal stories we each could tell of the experiences we shared together. I believe it can all be summed up as, shared values, love, kindness and respect. 

While we grieve with you in your loss ,we know that we shall see them again. It was and is our privilege to have known and worked with them in life’s journey.

Oscar and Diana Avant

She was one of the most amazing women that I have ever known.  She always was happy and beautiful and one of the most helpful people that I had the acquaintance to meet.  She loved the Lord and expressed it every day.  I remember how happy she was when she went skydiving and I just looked at her and said I hope when I get to be her age that I will attack life like she did.  She will be so missed and truly an angel here on earth.

My best memory of Aunt Ruthie was of her in her old house on Viers Mill Road with my cousins Brenda, Linda, and Nancy sitting at the kitchen laughing and laughing and laughing.  One would say something that would set the others off and all four of them would laugh until they had tears in their eyes.  They would pause less than a moment before another would set them off again.   There was so much laughter and joy in that house.  
And I remember the little wooden doghouse hanging on their kitchen wall with all the family names on various wooden dogs.  I would always check to see who was in the doghouse whenever I would visit.
But Aunt Ruthie had a belly laugh I will never forget.  She gave it to her kids as well!

You will always be our beloved “Roof” and servant above all servants to my family. Receive the greatest reward possible now from your Jesus my dear Friend. I remember you told me the last thing Russ did on his last breath was to reach his arms out to you. May that dramatic moment now be with Jesus holding you both in His arms with the grandest of smiles and laughter I remember you both with. Prayers and salvation in Jesus Christ to all who knew you Ruth. Job Well Done! Thank You!

Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of Aunt Ruth.  She was a shining light to everyone around her.  My mom, Mary Jo Shigley, and Aunt Ruth were kindred spirits.  They loved the beach, family (especially babies) and having a good time.  They would get together and laugh, drink margaritas and enjoy life.  As mom got older, Aunt Ruth made a point to visit her whenever she was in Florida.  Aunt Ruth was also fiercely independent and would drive by herself from Maryland to Florida when she was well into her 80's.  I will miss her beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. She loved the Lord with all her heart.  I know she is in Heaven with Mom laughing and drinking margaritas.  Love you always.
