Vera Mae Paxton was born on June 18, 1933 to Thomas Howard and Mamie Paxton in Mackeys, North Carolina. She married William Smithson (Bill) on September 24, 1950. They raised 5 children; Glenn Sr. (deceased), (Beth), Linda (Winston), Kevin Sr. (Eva), Sharon (deceased), (Vincent) and Gary Sr. (Saleha). The Smithson family lived in White Plains, New York.
Vera was employed with the IBM Corporation, and she worked dutifully for 20 years before retiring. She always was the go to person for business, personal, friendship and financial advice. Prior to retirement Vera purchased a lovely home in Silver Spring, Maryland.
As many know, Vera was known as the matriarch of her family, always willing to provide her home to family and close friends for love, comfort, food, and not to mention a party. She loved to travel and visit friends and family. The Caribbean Islands was one of her favorite places to visit. Vera was well loved for her generous spirit, and encouraging words. “Mama” as she was affectionately known, was counted on to listen, and offer counsel with wit and humor.
Vera leaves behind a beloved sister; Marie Brooks, 10 grandchildren; Erika (Michael), Glenn, Crystal (Stephan), Aaron, Chaz (Keri), Lanae, Robert, Gary, Justin, Kevin (Tiffany) and eight great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
Vera will truly be missed by all who came into contact with her beautiful smile and positive outlook.
