It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of William Wei-Yu Chin, 81, of Silver Spring, MD, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Born in 1942 in Taishan, Guangdong, China, William was one of seven children to the late Duck Chung Chin and Ong Sui Ngor Chin. He immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings where they settled in Washington D.C.’s Chinatown. There he worked at Mee Wah Lung, the family grocery store. On a trip to Hong Kong to buy supplies for the store, he met and married the love of his life, Mei. They returned home and started a family in Temple Hills, Maryland.
He enjoyed classic cars, playing Mahjong, and listening to oldies music. Although a man of few words, he had a great sense of humor which he often shared with the people around him. When he wasn't working at Mee Wah Lung, he spent his time with his family fishing, crabbing, and grilling.
William is survived by his 6 favorite children: Andrew, Marcus (Stephanie), Glen (Stephanie), Sam (Muriel), Jonathan, and Matthew and grandchildren: Melody Sui, Ryan Jin, Suzie Mei, Clara, Braden and Bryce Chin.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Jean Lee (Victor) and Christine Woo (Lin) and survived by his siblings: Kenneth Chin, John Chin (Susan), Wesley Chin (JoAnn), and Meta Yee (Lockett) and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive visitors at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, June 22 from 3p.m. to 7p.m.
The celebration of William’s life will be held on June 23 at 10 a.m. at the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home; followed by a graveside burial ceremony at 1 p.m. at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
