

Willie Mae George (101), daughter of the late Robert and Julia Chavis. Mother of three wonderful sons, Leroy Clay Jr (Carolyn), Robert Clay (Yolanda) and Marc Clay Sr (Judy), Grandmother of Nicole Burgess, Leroy Clay III (Jennifer), Marc “Wayne” Clay Jr and Jeremy Clay, Great-grandmother of Michael Burgess II and Lennox Rose Clay. Willie Mae was preceded in death by her husband Theodore George Sr., M.D. She was also survived by one sister Christine Jones.
Willie Mae was born in Winton, North Carolina on May 4, 1924. She was an educator by profession and taught in District of Columbia Public School System, grades 3 and 5 at Bunker Hill Elementary School. She earned multiple degrees during her career, Bachelor of Science at North Carolina Central University, Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Education at the American University in Washington, DC.
Willie Mae had numerous professional, social and religious affiliations. She was Principal of the Head Start Program, Master Teacher and trained student teachers, U S Department of Commerce Award, Outstanding Service Award as President of the Alpha Wives of DC, Life Member of the National Council of Negro Women, member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Xi Omega Chapter in DC, American University Alumni Association, North Carolina Central University Alumni Association, member of the Retired Teachers Association and Retired Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Willie Mae volunteered at the White House during the Clinton Administrations, the Leisure Club and Helping Hands Club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Monday activities Club. She was a long-standing member of the 19th Street Baptist Church in DC.
Willie Mae left an outstanding legacy of a life well-lived. She will be missed by the many lives she touched, family, friends, former students, colleagues, fellow volunteers and organizations.
A graveside service for Willie will be held Friday, September 5, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, 4001 Suitland Rd, Suitland-Silver Hill, MD 20746.
