Age 95, passed away May 3, 2012, after a short illness in his Wilmette home, surrounded by loved ones. Interested in the sciences, even as a young boy living in the Hyde Park area, Dr. Engel was encouraged by relatives to enter dental school. Following his studies at the University of Chicago, he completed his dental degree at the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry. After graduation, he enrolled in the college’s Graduate Orthodontic program, where he received his master’s degree. His career was interrupted by military duty in the South Pacific (1942-1945), where, as an officer, he ministered to the dental health of thousands of servicemen. After his service ended, he returned to Chicago and continued a long and fruitful research career, during which he applied advanced techniques to the study of teeth, bone, and other tissues to uncover some of the mystery of connective tissue and cells. Through his teaching and research, Professor Engel influenced the careers of many undergraduate and graduate students, teaching histology and oral biology at the University of Illinois Chicago. In addition, Dr. Engel maintained an orthodontic dental practice in Chicago and Homewood
Always a lively conversationalist, Dr. Engel maintained many other interests, including archaeology, botany, literature, music and art.
Dr. Engel is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Elaine Engel, his two children, Katherine and Louis Engel, his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Howard and Sondra Engel, his wife’s sons, Jeffrey and Vance Liebman, and numerous nephews and nieces.
