
Richard (Dick) Edwin Lyons (92) died on Dec. 30, 2014, at The Mather in Evanston, Illinois. Born on January 29, 1922 in Buffalo NY, to Rose and Louis Lyons. Received both his undergraduate and medical degree from University of Buffalo. Married Miriam “Mimi” Gotthelf Lyons in 1949. They lived in Buffalo, NY, Cleveland, OH, Staten Island, NY and later Evanston, IL, where he resided for 58 years. Dick was also a “snowbird” in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida.
Performed his medical residency at the Cleveland Clinic. He was Chief of Anesthesiology for the US Public Heath Service on Staten Island. Also worked at Augustana Hospital in Chicago, at St. Francis Hospital, in Evanston, IL, and later became Director of Anesthesiology and Director of the School of Nurse Anesthesia at Ravenswood Hospital, in Chicago, until his retirement in 1991.
Dick Lyons was Alderman of the 8th Ward of Evanston in the 60’s and 70’s.
His passions were golfing, skiing, hauling in a mainsail while racing his beloved sailboats, whipping up a key lime pie, listening to jazz or classical music, debating politics, traveling, and crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Deborah Lyons (Andy Cohen), Nancy Lyons (Dennis Wiatrak), Jeffrey Lyons (Susanne), and Joan Lynch (Jerry), along with his seven loving grandchildren: Lucy, Sally, Claire, Megan, Mara, Max, and Zak. He is predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Mimi, and siblings Harold, Donald, and Joyce. He will be deeply missed by his good friend Agnes Rodgers and his loving caregiver, Dorothy Archer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors without Borders or to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 18 at 11AM, at the Mather at 425 Davis Street, Evanston.
