Henry was born in the family home in Bingham in 1928. He was the son of Donald and Melba (Abbott) Hunnewell, and had three younger sisters, Jean, Frances, and his favorite, Mary Lou. Henry's childhood years spanned the entire Great Depression and all of World War II, and were spent in Skowhegan, growing up in a happy and loving home. He graduated from Skowhegan High School with the Class of 1947 on a Friday the 13th, but always seemed to enjoy good luck anyway.
Henry promptly enlisted in the U.S. Army, and proudly served his country during the Korean War.
After returning to civilian life, Henry moved to Connecticut and met and married the love of his life, Shirley Wallace of New Britain. They had two children, Lynn and Steven. Henry worked as Tax Assessor for the City of Hartford, Senior Tax Examiner for the State of Connecticut, and as an Accountant for First National Stores. One day, apparently longing for home, Henry returned from work and told his wife: "Shirley, we're moving". To which she replied: "Where?". To which he replied: "Maine". To which she replied: "ok??"...
In Maine, Henry and his family eventually settled back in his hometown of Skowhegan, where both of his children also graduated from his beloved Skowhegan High School. Henry worked many years at probably his favorite job of all, as an accountant for the Maine Milk Commission. Mostly it was his favorite job because his boss loved golf almost as much as he did, and he got to spend most all sunny summer afternoons playing golf at Western View Golf Course.
Henry was a lifelong lover of the water, he enjoyed swimming, camping, golf, reading, annual hunting trips, loved his pets (as well as everyone else's pets), family gatherings (especially with the old timers from Bingham), discount senior lunches and suppers, and talking politics (as long as you agreed with him!).
His last days were filled with family and friends at his 90th Birthday Party, where he once again blew out all the candles, and a week later at Christmas with his wife and children.
He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Melba; and his three sisters, Frances, Jean, and Mary Lou.
Henry is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley, of Augusta; his daughter Lynn Dugal, and her husband Conrad of Augusta; his son Steven and his wife Vickie of Gardiner; five grandchildren, Melissa Hunt and her husband Tyler, Renee Dugal, Sarah Schaeffer and her husband Jeremiah, and Ashley and Zachary Work; five great grandchildren, Addison, Bennett, Bryce, Annabelle, and Madelyn; two nieces, Jane Boucher and her family, and Ann Goodridge and her family; and cousins Lewis Baker and Gerald Hunnewell.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors at the Alfond Center for Health, the staff at Mainely Eldercare, and especially the staff at Country Manor in Coopers Mills for the incredible personal care Henry received while he was there.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Henry's life with a memorial service at 1pm, Friday, January 4, 2019 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan. Interment with military honors will be held in the spring at Bingham Village Cemetery, Bingham.
