

Melvin married the former Elizabeth Erb on Nov. 12, 1949 in Elkton, MD. He was raised as a farm boy. He worked at Anchor Hocking Glass as a packer, made silkscreen for glass bottling at Owens Illinois, and made flooring at Mannington Floor, moved to Maine in 1967 and worked at Boardman Sawmill in Cornville, worked at Maine Spinning Mill, and later became a certified Maine Tax Assessor. He worked as an assessor in Skowhegan, Cornville and other small towns. He was a founding member of the Cornville Fire Dept. and he was retired as a life-time member.
He was a member of the Maine Tax Assessors Association, the Cornville Historical Society, past member of the SAD #54 School Board, and served in several positions in the town of Cornville. He enjoyed gardening, growing tomatoes and corn, riding his 4-wheeler, and loved to work. He especially loved to spend time with his family.
Besides his wife Elizabeth of 65years of Cornville, he is survived by his 4 children; Melvin Hogate Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Cornville, Kenneth Hogate and his wife Brenda of Cornville, Elizabeth Jean Winkley of Virginia, and Jonathan Hogate and his wife Debra of Skowhegan, 12 grandchildren; Jessica Ward and her husband Todd, Isaac Hogate and his wife Erika, Sara Hogate and her companion Chuck, Heather Hogate and friend Bo, Eric Hogate and his friend Jessica, Dan Mosher and his wife Christeen, Gregory Hogate and his companion Nicole, Philip Hogate and his companion Grace, Christopher Winkley and his wife Jessica, Jennifer Harris and her husband Neil, Amanda Hogate and Conor Hogate, 9 great-grandchildren; Deyonce Ward, Quinton Ward, Elsa Hogate, William Dutton, Cody Dutton, Neil Harris Jr., Katie Harris, Talon Mosher and his companion Tabatha, and Ryan Mosher, and a daughter-in-law, Louise Johnson and her husband Brian of Indiana.
Melvin was predeceased by his parents, and one son, Lewis Hogate.

The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice and Cedar Ridge Center for all their wonderful care during Melvin’s illness.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 6th from 6-8PM at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, ME 04976.
