

Madison – Semone M. (Oakes) Lake, 66, passed away at home surrounded by her family on September 21, 2013. She was born in Rumford on January 26, 1947 the daughter of Semone (Ames) and Melvin Oakes, Sr. She was raised in Rumford and graduated from schools there.
Semone worked for a time at General Electric, Bass Shoe, as a corrections officer in Farmington and at Dexter Shoe. However, her passion was painting. Semone spent 14 years selling painting supplies and all sorts of other crafts and supplies at her shop, Crafty Ideas, in Mercer. Her shop had a little bit of everything in it. Semone was a true artist who loved to share her gift by teaching painting classes. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, crafting and driving. Her beloved dog Foxy was never far from her side.
Semone is survived by her husband of nearly 23 years, Marshall Lake; brothers Calvin, Larry and Wayne Oakes; children, Val Stewart and Wade Lake and his wife Denise; grandchildren Robert, Justin and his wife Courtney, and Dalton; great grandchildren Megan, Lauren and Damian; the painting girls Vicki, Judy and Charlene; and a large extended family.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother Melvin Oakes Jr.; and sister Judy Oakes.
Visitation will be held from 12noon until the time of services on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan where a funeral service will begin at 1pm with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Rest Cemetery, Athens.
Semone’s family extends their deepest gratitude to Maine General Hospice especially to nurse Michelle Demchak for the exceptional care provided to both Semone and their entire family.
