

She was born on February 28, 1933 in Austin. She was raised up in what is now
called the UT Law School and spent many of her summers up on the “hill” with
her grandmother here in Smithville. Bess was of the Austin High School Class of
’51 and was an obsessive quilter and exceptional seamstress and former
Executive Secretary for many years. She was also an avid animal lover. She
loved her family and friends deeply.
Bess is survived by her husband of 58 years,
Phillip R. Lewis. Daughter, Dee Dee Barton and husband Bob of Taylor, sons,
Mark D. Lewis of Hallsville, TX and Randy Lewis of Taylor. Her brother Harry D.
Thomason, Jr. and his wife Laura of Maine. Six grandkids: Stacey Gruetzner,
Roxanne Jasek, Chance and Shelbi Lewis, Cara and Susan Lewis and five great-
grand children: Zane Conder, Tyler, Morgan and Ian Jasek, and Braxton Ames.
And her beagle, Duke.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Shapiro, Barbara Jones, Rebecca,
Rupert and the rest of the staff at Critical Care Consultants. They are forever
grateful to them for their caring, compassion and devotion to Bess over the years.
Also, Odyssey Hospice: Belinda Patterson, Kay Hairston, Teresa Day, Toby Vega,
Elayne Cook, Rosalinda Guerrero and Raymond Williams. There are no words to
thank each of you for the exceptional care and compassion you showed Bess and
the family. The family has requested memorials in lieu of flowers to the Austin
Humane Society.
