Born March 11, 1942 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Leonard E. and Rita (Duggan) Burgmyer, he graduated from Durfee High School, class of 1960. After high school, he served as a private first class in the United States Army, receiving a medal for good conduct. Later, he earned his undergraduate degree in professional engineering from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and his masters degrees from Northeastern University and the Naval War College/ Salve Regina. He proudly worked for the Naval Underwater System Center at the Department of Defense in Newport, RI for thirty five years.
Incredibly gifted, with an engineer’s mind, he could build or fix almost anything. A passionate gardener, he would till the land every summer to grow all sorts of vegetables. A member of the Fall River Ski Club, he taught his children to ski, and once retired he and his wife would hit the slopes every winter. A devout Catholic, he was a dedicated member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society at Our Lady of Peace. An avid traveler, who drove across the country multiple times and visited over 32 countries, he loved to experience new places. With each new trip, he instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of adventure and encouraged them to see the world, but most importantly, he was a supportive husband and father who encouraged his loved ones to achieve their dreams and fulfill their potential. A dedicated grandpa and Poppy, he attended countless games, plays, and recitals, and he enjoyed every minute of it because he loved his grandchildren. He loved his family and was always, always there for them.
