Born in Lomba da Maia, Sao Miguel, Acores, he was the son of Ernesto L. and Maria Augusta Rego. Known to many as Bert, he attended the Liceu Nacional de Ponta Delgada, and immigrated to the United States in 1958. He and his family have lived in Dartmouth since 1966.
Bert began his career working in the warehouse at Red L Foods, and moved on to work at Frionor Kitchens in the early 1970s. There, he worked as a forklift operator, eventually became plant manager, and retired as Vice-President of Operations for Frionor USA and president of New Bedford Seafoods. Following his retirement, he became a fixture at Marx Auto Center, shuttling customers and giving plenty of advice and direction to his son and grandson.
Bert was always willing to take on any mechanical challenge, especially if it involved cars. He was a great proponent of the metric system, and was always happy to extol its logic and simplicity. He was known to enjoy a good Portuguese meal in the company of friends and family, especially at Alianca Restaurant.
He is survived by his son Paul; his son Marc and his wife Paula; and his daughter Lisa Koczera and her husband Brian, all of Dartmouth. He will be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Nicole (Rego) Doliner and her husband Scott; Ryan Rego and his wife Kendra; Alyson Rego and her fiancé Charles Harding; Abby (Koczera) House and her husband Peter; Erin Rego, and Amy Koczera. Bert is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Nolan Doliner and Everly Rego. He was predeceased by his brother, Manuel Rego, and by his daughter-in-law, Maria A. Rego.
His funeral will be Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 9 a.m. from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt.
