Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Antone and Dorothy (Constantine) Mello, she was a lifelong resident of the city and a proud graduate of New Bedford High School.
Mrs. Santos had worked as a skilled stitcher in various textile factories for several years before raising her loving children along with many others.
She was a communicant of the former St. John the Baptist Church where she was a very active member of the St. John Forever Young Club, Our Lady of the Rosary Sodality and the Couples Club. She was well known as the malassada lady of the parish. She was awarded the Marian Medal by Bishop Sean O’Malley for her dedication to her religion. She then became a communicant of Mt. Carmel Church where she was a member of the Lady's Club and the Mt. Carmel Seniors. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge and well known as the coffee lady for the Dartmouth Council on Aging Senior Center where she was also a member of their senior club.
She is survived by her daughters, Hanna J. Santos, and Brenda A. Howes and her husband David of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Kimberly Thompson and her husband Jacob and Nicole Holmes
and her husband Gabriel of New Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Arianna Holmes and Connor Thompson of New Bedford, several nieces and nephews, and godchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings, Alfred, Alvaro and Adam Mello, Maria Bettencourt, Olympia Bolton, Eva Francis, and Albertina Cabral.
Her funeral will be held Friday, June 15, 2018 at 8 a.m. from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd, Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Rivet Street, New Bedford. Burial in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
