William C. Prescott Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. A lifelong educator and respected leader in independent schools, he leaves behind an enduring legacy that shaped the lives of countless students, teachers, and colleagues across the country.
Born on March 26, 1936, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, William began his education at Friends Academy and later attended St. George’s School, where he was awarded the prestigious St. George’s Medal. He continued his academic journey at Harvard University and earned a Master’s degree in English from Brown University.
William devoted his life to education. He began his teaching career in Illinois before returning to St. George’s School and later continuing his work in Michigan. From 1968 to 1976, he served as Upper School Head at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He then became Head of School at Kingswood (now part of Kingswood–Cranbrook) in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, serving from 1976 to 1980. In 1980, he assumed the role of Head of School at The Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island—a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 2003.
Throughout his career, William was known for his intellect, confidence, and unwavering dedication to excellence in education. He mentored generations of educators and inspired students with his passion for learning and leadership. He received numerous honors, including the Dingman Award from St. George’s School. Of all the qualities for which he was recognized, kindness was the one most often remembered.
William also remained deeply connected to the educational community through service as a trustee for institutions close to his heart: The Wheeler School, St. George’s School, Friends Academy, and Our Sister School.
Beyond his professional life, William found deep joy in the outdoors. A passionate sportsman, he loved duck hunting and fishing—pursuits that reflected his devotion to conservation. He was an avid gardener, generously sharing his abundant tomato harvest, and he spent many summers waging friendly battles against the deer and rabbits determined to enjoy his garden. Golf, tennis, and cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox brought him great happiness in the warmer months.
William was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Suzanne Wardwell Prescott (1945–2024), whose devotion, love, and steadfast commitment to family were constants in his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Robert A. Prescott (Lisa), Simonne Prescott Hummel, and Suzanne Prescott Callagy (Ryan). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Christopher, William, Bryant, Robert, Alexis, and Timothy.
William C. Prescott Jr.’s life was one of purpose, generosity, and profound impact. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him, and continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made to Our Sister School New Bedford, Massachusetts, The Wheeler School Providence, Rhode Island and Ducks Unlimited Atlantic Frontier in Bills memory.
