YARMOUTHPORT — Elizabeth Sarah "Sally" Cash, 84, died Sept. 5, 2011.
Sally was born in her grandparents' home in Yarmouthport during a snowstorm on Jan. 20, 1927. She defied odds in another medical era as the Keveney family oral history has her being "kept warm in the bread warmer side of a wood stove while in a blanket lined box, fed sugar water with a nip of whiskey" from a glass eye-dropper. She graduated from Yarmouth public schools with 12 years of perfect attendance. While in high school Sally played field hockey, and though admittedly "short, even in my day at barely 5'3," she also played basketball.
Sally attended Boston University and was enthralled with life in that historical city. Later she moved to Philadelphia where she attended secretarial school and worked for Western Union.
While in "Philly" she and Morton, a fellow Cape Codder (and "the boy next door") began dating. They were married on Christmas Eve 1949 in Yarmouthport while Mort was "on Army leave." Shortly after that she joined him in Anchorage, Alaska. Sally traveled, acting as ever the faithful, supportive military wife throughout much of the U.S. and Europe. She lived a life of loving acceptance to all and true devotion to family. Sally and Mort were married for 61 years. Sally was thrilled to watch her five children and nine grandchildren blossom. Up until her last days, her face would light up with a smile, as she would clap joyfully upon seeing "those great grand babies."
Sally was predeceased by her beloved husband, Morton; her mother, Elizabeth S. (MacDonald), and father William J. Keveney; as well as a grandson, Albert O. P. Nickelson III.
She is survived by her daughters: Maribeth Cash Nickelson of Yarmouthport, Lauriann Cash Geiger and her husband Sandy of Rogersville, Tenn., and Hilda Cash McCrillis of Mexico, Maine and Yarmouthport; and sons Kevin James Cash of Brewer Lake, Maine, and Morton Vernon Cash III of Yarmouthport. She also leaves a devoted "sister-in-her-heart," sister-in-law Peggy Ganshaw. Her surviving grandchildren include Hallie J. Nickelson, Elizabeth S. Hitchcock and her husband Jeremy, Kevin J. Cash Jr. and his wife Amanda, Rebecca S. Cookson and her husband Roland, Hannah M. Geraci and her husband Santo, Neal A., Keveney A., and Dean A. McCrillis. Sally will watch over her sweet little ones, the great-grandchildren Isaac, Hailey, Matthew, Gabriel and Julian, as they continue to blossom.
The Cash family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care for their extended, kind assistance, and Deb for enriching Sally's quality of life this past year.
Interment will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, to be followed by a visitation and memorial service by the Rev. Daniel Jackson at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis.
Donations in Sally's memory may be made to either Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod & Islands or the Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & the Islands. Donations for both may be sent to 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
