

G. Elizabeth "Betty" Sheehy, 82, of Dennis, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. She was born in Yarmouth to the late William F. and Gertrude Sears Hodsdon. She was the wife of the late, wonderful Alfred M. Sheehy, Sr., M.D. (1999), sister of the late William H. Hodsdon, granddaughter of the late D. H. Sears, sister-in-law of the late David Sheehy, sister-in-law of the late Mary Sheehy, and sister-in-law of the late Daniel Sheehy and his wife Betty.
Betty graduated from John Simpkins High School in South Yarmouth in 1952 and from Malden Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1955. She started her career in healthcare as a Registered Nurse with Cape Cod Hospital in 1955. There, she met the love of her life, Alfred Sheehy, and married him in 1964. Al and Betty settled in Centerville to raise their growing family, where they remained until 1978. They moved to Belhaven, North Carolina in 1978, where she joined Al's medical practice. In 1985, Betty and Al moved to Beaumont, Texas, where they both worked at Stat-Care, an early stand-alone medical clinic. In 1996, Al and Betty returned to Cape Cod. As an 11th generation Cape Codder, Betty was happy to retire back to the Cape with her husband and other family members.
Betty’s seven loving children survive her: Alfred Sheehy, Jr. of Portland, Maine, and former daughter-in-law Susan Levine of South Portland, Maine; Emily Mezzetti and husband Jack of Hyannis; Catherine Crean and husband Dick of Scarsdale, New York; Margaret Buehler and husband Chuck of Houston, Texas; Elizabeth Sheehy of Dennis; Mary Preston and husband Robert of Belmar, New Jersey; and Megan McFarland and husband Jim of Allen, Texas. Eleven wonderful grandchildren also survive Betty: Michael Sheehy, Mary Kate Mezzetti, Alex & Andrew Crean, Claire & Jean Buehler, Christina Semple, Jack & Emma Preston, and Lauren & Kaitlyn McFarland. In addition, her brother David S. Hodsdon and wife Donna of Dennis; sister-in-law Ruth Hodsdon of Lady of the Lake, Florida; brother Richard Hodsdon and wife Brenda of Virginia; sister-in-law Mary Sheehy of Plymouth; and brother-in-law John and his wife Patricia of Mashpee also survive her. Betty also leaves behind 20 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, June 11th at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster followed by burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville.
